BTEC Level 2 Award – Sport

Introduction to the course

To provide students with the knowledge and practical skills to improve their understanding of sport, fitness and exercise.

Students will be able to practically apply what they learn.

The course is ideal for pupils who want to build leadership skills, confidence and communication skills.

The course includes elements that will allow pupils to research and write about sports, fitness and health issues.

Pupils will study a range of units:

Unit Examples of topics
1 Components of fitness. Principles of training. Fitness training methods. Fitness testing.
2 Rules, regulations and scoring systems for selected sports. Practical skills, techniques and tactics in selected sports. Review sports performance.
3 Design a personal fitness training programme. Exercise adherence factors. Strategies for training success. Review a personal fitness training programme.
4 Sports leadership skills. Practical planning and leading of sports activities. Review the planning and leading of sports activities.

Progression/Further Study

The Edexcel BTEC Award in Sport builds many qualities such as practical technique, leadership, communication and confidence. These are transferable skills sought after by further education and employers.

Further study at college, e.g. BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science, or Sport and Leisure related NVQ qualifications. AS level physical education as part of an AS level programme (see college prospectuses or websites for information on course entry requirements). BTEC or Level 3 qualification in Public Services. Possible career paths might include Professional Sports Person, Sports Coach/Instructor, Teaching Assistant, Fire Service, Physiotherapy, Health Assistant, Police Officer, Armed Forces, Dietician, Leisure Centre Worker, Gymnasium Instructor or Manager, Healthcare Assistant, Lifeguard, Youth Worker, Gym /, Outdoor Education Assistant.
